In earlier articles, we talked about how to build nominal sentences with a definite noun and an indefinite adjective and how to build nominal sentences with a using the conjunction وَ or by using prepositions. In this article, we’re going to talk about how to build nominal sentences in Arabic using demonstrative pronouns.

You use demonstrative pronouns to specify a noun that you’re referring to. Whenever you point to something and say, “This is…” or “That is…” or “These are…” or “Those are…”, you’re using demonstrative pronouns.

In Arabic, these are the demonstrative pronouns that you can use to build nominal sentences:

هذاthis (masculine)
هذهthis (feminine)
ذلكthat (masculine)
تلكthat (feminine)
هؤلاءthese
أولئكthose

So you could get the sentence, “هذه ابيت” which translates to “This is a house.” Keep in mind that if you write هذه البيت it doesn’t mean “This is the house.” It means “This house.” You can only make a nominal sentence with an indefinite noun or an indefinite adjective.
