dagger alif

noun

A dagger alif is a short, vertical stroke above an Arabic letter. It indicates a long “a” sound above. It is used in place of a regular alif. An example of its usage is in the word, “يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا” which means “Oh you.” The dagger alif is above the “ي.” You can see it used in “The Loan Verse” in Surah al-Baqarah in the Quran.
