There is a fundamental difference between the words “velocity” and “speed.” They both measure distance over time, but velocity has a direction while speed does not.

Let’s use a real-world example to understand these two concepts. When someone not only declares that they’re going to do something but then acts in alignment with that intention, people tend to join them. Often, the followers can’t even see what they’re looking at or see what the other person sees. But they can see that day in and day out, this individual acts in alignment with that intention, and they start to figure “I want to be there as early as possible. When everyone else sees whatever this person sees, I want to be with them.”

Now, let’s consider the example of someone who declares an intention but then doesn’t take action in alignment with this intention. They blame the economy, they blame their family of origin, they blame society. They stay locked at that same logical level. They are not wrong. They’re just at that logical level. Of course the economy and society and family are to blame — they likely have proof and evidence that this is true. But because they now can’t eat their words or lose face, they have to scramble. They have to jump from one person’s judgement to the next person’s judgement to the next societal rule, and they are covering a lot of distance at that logical level. But they only have speed — not velocity.

In The Magnetized Man, Omar experiences a lot of wins only to essentially become demagnetized at the end. But that’s because he was never magnetized to begin with. He relied on women’s emotions (so long as those emotions were manageable and aligned to his needs) and technology to bring what he wanted into existence. He believes that money and the approval of others will give him what he wants. In essence, the entire book shows him operating with a lot of speed and almost no velocity. He burns a lot of energy and covers a lot of physical and emotional ground, and while he has somewhat changed by the end, his growth is not as materially significant as he thought it would be.
